FIRST PHOTOS OF NEWBORN MOUNTAIN GORILLA IN CONGO!
Here are the FIRST PHOTOS of the newborn Mountain Gorilla that was born on Saturday 17th February in the Mikeno sector in Congo. The newborn has been named Ndeze (pronounced Deze), after a local tribal chief who died just two days before the birth. These photos were taken when Ndeze was just 4 days old.

Mother and baby are doing well, and are being protected by the Silverback Rugendo. The mother, Safari (which means Travel in Swahili), is closely guarded by Rugendo so we were very lucky to be able to take these photos and cause no disturbance whatsoever.

Here you can see Safari, Ndeze and Rugendo… he stays close at all times.

More great news on the horizon… the adult female Mburanumwe of the same family is also pregnant and due to give birth soon!

Daily news from the conservation frontline by Innocent and Diddy, and other Congolese rangers risking their lives to save mountain gorillas of the Virunga National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
Paulin - I’m so glad to get in first and comment: such wonderful images that bring hope to us and such a nice touch to name the baby after the local chief deceased. The king is dead - long live the king…
One hopes that through your blog enough attention is given to the plight of the Congo gorillas and thanks to people like Chris that your work can continue safely and successfully.

It is truly fantastic and very encouraging to see these images. I look forward to seeing the shots of Ndeze playing with his new cousin, soon. Keep up the good work!
Congratulations! When there are only 700 or so mountain gorillas left in the wild, this is a success for the world…this should be on CNN!!!!! But then, of course, the world would relax and think everything is fine and dandy…which we know is far from true…
Hoooray!!! This image of the love of the parents for this baby is remarkable and should prove without a doubt animals do have emotions! Please keep up the great work in protecting them!
Ohhhhhhhh My God a new baby…How fun. Nothing more beautiful than this. Where there is life, there is still hope…..Steph
Stunning! The information on the family structure is fascinating, would love to read as much as possible about the new family. Many thanks!
Simply beautiful! Congratulations!
The photos are fantastic! And the news that there is another female pregnant is beyond words.
Of course, these infants probably would not have been born, and certainly would not have any chance at life if it were not for you and the rangers. What you do has far reaching effects. We can clearly see that in the photos that you’ve posted.
And I think that Ndeze is a fine name for the baby - and I realize the importance of it with the passing of the local chief. Very good choice of names!
Thanks for the comments. I’ll pass them on to the rangers who are in the forest at the moment. It’s been a good few days, and we’re all feeling pretty positive.

Wow! thanks for the photos. I hope you’ll be able to safely get more pics as Ndeze grows up.

Thanks for the wonderful pics. All you rangers are the most wonderful humans in the world. God works in mysterious ways - for every gorilla killed, two more are born. Congratulations and thanks to Chris- may God bless him always.
Breaking News - our own Paulin features in a Daily Telegraph (UK) article about his successes in gorilla conservation.

Hi,
Really lovely to see the pictures of the newborn - it’s a small wonder that despite everything these wonderful creatures manage to continue with their loving, family life. Hopefully with your help they can continue to grow and grow.
I’ve been following this blog for some time now and was excited to see an article from the Associated Press featured on msnbc.com this morning about the new birth. It also includes some background information on the area. Hopefully this will improve awareness! Thank you for all you do.
The article can be found online at:

Hi, I found this site via a Yahoo! news article this afternoon. Here is the link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20070309/ts_csm/ovirungax_1
This site is wonderful. Thank you for doing the work that you do to help keep these wonderful beings safe. I can’t believe that there are only 700+ Mountain Gorillas left!
I will spread the word about this site. Peace!
[…] You will remember our post on 1st March this year, when we published the first photos of the baby gorilla. It was a big moment for us - a sign of hope after weeks of hardship and struggle. Richard Leakey is the Chairman of WildlifeDirect, and the patron of the Great Ape Survival Project. His enthusiasm for the good news is very encouraging. His family’s history is closely tied to Virunga - his father, Louis, studied the gorillas, and brought Diane Fossey to the Virungas almost forty years ago. […]
[…] Paul has posted pictures of a newborn mountain gorilla, Kabila, named after the president of Congo, Joseph Kabila, and Ndeze, named after a local tribal chief who died just two days before the birth. And news of a sick gorilla infant: I am happy to tell you all that the 2 1/2 year old infant of the Kabirizi family is not in grave danger. Ntibahanana has discoloration of the hair and the hair is also falling out on the thighs. Dr Jacques from the Mountain Gorilla Vet Program visited the family yesterday, but was unfortunately not able to get too close. […]
