Conservation Successes Amid Economic Challenges
As many of you may be aware, Kenya has been in the news as thousands of young people demonstrate against corruption and call for the rejection of the Finance Bill, 2024. Sadly, the government retaliation has been swift and brutal, and several young people have been killed and many injured. We want you to know that we and all our partners are safe. We hope that these demonstrations lead to a swift resolution and a return to business for wildlife conservation. Despite these heavy disruptions, we have continued with our important work of promoting the conservation of nature and the environment.
Last month, the Kajiado Environment and Lands Court upheld a crucial ruling that protects the iconic Amboseli ecosystem from agricultural encroachment. This decision is a significant victory for elephants and marks the start of our renewed commitment to safeguarding Kenya’s beautiful parks and wildlife.
The Conservation Alliance of Kenya (CAK), which WildlifeDirect is a member of, brought this case in 2021. The appeal made by KiliAvo Fresh Limited to lift the ban on growing vegetables, including avocados, in the Kimana area of Amboseli was rejected and we welcome the ruling of the court. The court ruled that the farm is located in a wildlife corridor and violated local land-use plans, which designate the area for livestock and wildlife.
It is inconceivable that this spectacular ecosystem and all its wildlife and people could be put at risk to serve one avocado farmer. It threatens the water, soil, wildlife movements, and wildlife security as well as pastoralism. The court has honored Kenya’s initiatives to establish buffer zones and dispersal spaces for migratory wildlife. Elephants are now free to roam.
