Official Tribute to Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton

WildlifeDirect joins Kenya, Africa, and the global conservation community in mourning the passing of Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton, CBE a pioneering scientist, visionary leader, and towering figure in the protection of Africa’s elephants. His life’s work transformed global understanding of elephants and laid the scientific foundations for many of the protections they enjoy today.

Dr. Douglas-Hamilton’s groundbreaking research in the 1960s and 1970s established the first rigorous population surveys of Africa’s elephants and revealed the devastating scale of the poaching crisis. His insistence on robust data and his relentless pursuit of truth catalysed international policy reforms and inspired generations of conservationists and researchers.

Through Save the Elephants, the organisation he founded, Iain championed long-term monitoring, advanced tracking technologies, and community-centred conservation approaches. His work demonstrated not only the intelligence and social complexity of elephants, but also the urgent need to safeguard them from escalating threats.

WildlifeDirect is proud to have collaborated closely with Dr. Douglas-Hamilton, particularly through Kenya’s Hands Off Our Elephants campaign. His data, scientific insights, and unwavering commitment to transparency were instrumental in shaping the campaign’s evidence-based approach to tackling poaching and illegal trafficking. His guidance helped strengthen national and regional responses, inform public awareness efforts, and reinforce Kenya’s global leadership in elephant conservation.

Iain’s legacy is visible in every successful elephant protection effort across Africa: in improved aerial and ground survey methods, in strengthened anti-poaching strategies, in the integration of science into national decision-making, and in the global recognition that elephants are sentient beings whose survival requires collective responsibility.

As we reflect on his extraordinary contributions, WildlifeDirect reaffirms its commitment to advancing the principles he championed scientific integrity, collaboration, community empowerment, and unwavering dedication to the survival of elephants.

Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton’s life’s work will continue to guide us. His vision endures in thriving elephant herds and in the conservation leaders he inspired across the continent and around the world.

We honour his memory by continuing the work to which he devoted his life ensuring that Africa’s elephants remain protected, valued, and free.
